Media Advisory

The Department of Social Development will as part of enhancing child protection services in the country, host a hybrid panel discussion focussing on unaccompanied and separated migrant children on Monday, October 18, at GCIS in Pretoria.

Unaccompanied and separated migrant children are vulnerable and require more attention and assistance to be realised through the provision of efficient social services. The DSD sector has over the years focused on challenges and improved the allocation of services for this group of vulnerable children.

Collaborative efforts have been in place between Social Development and other departments as well as social partners to assist migrant children. These concerted efforts call for the need to reflect on this and appreciate the achievements.

Amongst the panellists, will be representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Save Children SA who will not only focus on the problems affecting children but also appreciate milestones achieved on services rendered for unaccompanied and separated migrant children. Experts and presenters from the Departments of Social Development, Basic Education and Home Affairs will also participate during panel discussions.

The Department of Social Development will be continuing with the Know Your NPO Status campaign in various provinces by educating Non-Profit Organisations to comply with the NPO Act requirements. NPOs registered with the Department are required in terms of the NPO Act to submit their annual reports, narrative and financial reports to the Department. This applies to all NPOs registered under the NPO Act, whether funded or unfunded.

NPOs are also advised to register and submit their documents online by visiting the NPO site on www.npo.gov.za to submit and upload their annual reports and other documents or by visiting their nearest Social Development offices. These activities are held as part of the Social Development Month campaign under the theme “Delivering DSD services during COVID-19 in the Year of Charlotte Maxeke.”
