Media Advisory

13 July, Upington – Northern Cape: Launched in May 2023, the purpose of the Public Hearings on the Policy on Social Development Services to Persons with Disabilities seeks to encourage the inclusion of persons with disabilities in decision making.

The Policy, explained Deputy Minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, is informed by and aligned to the White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (WPRPD) which was approved in December 2015.

“The provisions of this Policy are geared towards accelerating access to a comprehensive and responsive social protection system as outlined in the National Development Plan: Vision 2030 (NDP),” she expressed.

The rationale behind the Policy on Social Development Services to Persons with Disabilities is to achieve inclusion through mainstreaming of disability.

This will be done by ensuring that the department, its entities and stakeholders take the rights and needs of persons with disabilities into consideration in all their programmes, engagements and projects.

There have been four public hearings (out of the planned 27) conducted thus far in the following provinces:
• Gauteng
• KwaZulu-Natal

The media is invited to cover the public hearings in the Northern Cape scheduled as follows:

Date: Thursday, 13 July 2023
Venue: Protea Hotel by Marriott, 24 Schroder St – Upington
