Deputy Minister: Social Development
Director General: Social Development

The Department of Social Development, will, in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launch the Government-to-Government (G2G) programme to implement social behavioural change programmes.

The U.S. government has made available funds for the South African government to implement two of the Department of Social Development’s (DSD) flagship SBC programmes including You Only Live Once (YOLO) and ChommY which target children and young people between the ages of 10-24 years.

YOLO and ChommY are part of DSD’s Compendium of SBC programmes that seek to reduce risky sexual behaviours to prevent new HIV infections. YOLO targets young people between the ages 15 and 24 under the tagline: “It’s my life, it’s my choice…I choose to behave responsibly”. YOLO aims at building young people’s self-esteem, confidence, self-efficacy and resiliency to deal with adverse situations.

ChommY targets children under the tagline: “Invest in my Future…Protect me Today”, and it aims to generate knowledge, develop skills and empower children to make informed choices to reduce HIV infections, substance abuse and to prevent teenage pregnancies through the use of indigenous games. The word ChommY, which is a colloquial term for “friend” aims to build positive friendships among 10 – 14 year olds and to encourage young boys and girls to motivate one another to minimise being involved in risky behaviours.

The G2G programme will assist DSD to scale up these programmes in two provinces i.e KZN and Gauteng for a period of 5 years.
