The Department of Social Development will observe International Widows Day during Women’s Month with an interactive session at eDumbe Community Hall, KwaZulu-Natal, under the theme: “Building Resilient Economies for All.”
Established by the United Nations in 2010, International Widows Day is observed annually to raise awareness of the challenges faced by widows globally. The day highlights the rights of widows, addresses poverty and injustice, and promotes support for those who have lost their spouses.
In South Africa, widows often experience disinheritance, extreme poverty, societal exclusion, and lack of access to emotional support and counselling services. Many also face grief, trauma, economic insecurity, discrimination, stigma, and harmful traditional practices.
The eDumbe session will provide a platform to discuss these challenges, including poverty, unemployment, societal stigma, inequality, and Gender-Based Violence. Key thematic areas of focus will include cultural and religious oppression, socio-economic struggles, and injustices faced by widows. The session aims to identify long-term solutions to improve the lives of widows and their families.
