The Minister of Social Development, Ms Nokuzola Sisisi Tolashe, has issued a public call for nominations for the appointment of new members to the Central Drug Authority (CDA), inviting qualified individuals to contribute to South Africa’s ongoing battle against substance abuse.
The CDA serves as a critical advisory body to the Minister and government, playing a central role in shaping national drug policy. It is tasked with the implementation of the National Drug Master Plan, which focuses on coordinated strategies for prevention, treatment, reintegration, and harm reduction related to substance use and abuse.
Seeking Experienced and Committed Professionals
Individuals or organisations nominating candidates are urged to put forward individuals with a solid track record in combating substance abuse. Candidates must hold a qualification at a minimum of National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 7—equivalent to a bachelor’s degree—and have at least five years of experience in one or more specialised areas. These include research, treatment, early intervention, prevention, law enforcement, medico-pharmacology, and aftercare services.
The Department emphasised that nominations lacking the required qualifications will not be considered.
About the Central Drug Authority
The CDA comprises 34 members: 21 representing government departments and 13 appointed through public nominations. These members are entrusted with ensuring national alignment on drug-related issues and contributing to evidence-based policy and practice.
The departments represented on the CDA include Social Development, Health, Justice, Basic Education, SAPS, Correctional Services, Home Affairs, Treasury, and others with mandates relevant to the fight against substance abuse.
The current CDA’s term ends in March 2026, and the newly appointed members will serve a term not exceeding five years, as determined by the Minister.
Nomination Process and Deadline
Nomination forms are available from the Department of Social Development and must be submitted with a comprehensive CV of the nominee by 30 June 2025. Late or incomplete submissions will be disqualified. Following submission, a shortlist of candidates will be forwarded to Parliament, which will conduct interviews and recommend 13 appointees to the Minister.
