As part of the Ministerial Outreach Programme in Mpumalanga, the Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu will today, visit Greater Rape Intervention Programme (GRIP), a local NPO in the fore front of addressing the South Africa’s unacceptably high levels of gender-based violence and femicide.

Founded in 2000, GRIP provides counselling, advocacy, and psychosocial support services to survivors of gender-based violence, sexual assault and rape. The organisation has established care rooms at various points of entry for anyone wanting to report GBV-related cases.

In addition, GRIP conducts GBV prevention through community and school awareness programmes, pre-court preparations and runs shelters that provide temporary shelter for survivors. These services complement the mandate of Social Development in the implementation of Pillar 4 of the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.

Minister Zulu will conclude the third day of the Ministerial Outreach Programme by visiting Isinkwa Sethemba, a local cooperative that runs a bakery supported by the National Development Agency (NDA), an agency of the Department of Social Development.

The cooperative was formed in response to the high rates of unemployment, particularly among young people in South Africa. Though this initiative, the cooperative has created training and job opportunities for young people in Mbombela.
