Members of the Children’s  parliament will descend to the Eastern Cape province this week to prepare for the 11th sitting of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Parliament to be held on Friday, 14 July 2023.

The Children’s Parliament is a platform created to serve as a channel for child participation and afford them an opportunity to influence policy as well as programmes targeted at ensuring that their rights are realised.

This is in line with protecting the right for children to participate in all matters affecting them as expressed in the Children’s Act and the UN Convention on the rights of the child.

The Parliament, which is held in honour of South Africa’s first democratic President, Tata Nelson Mandela - will bring children from across South Africa to debate and deliberate on issues such as alcohol and substance abuse, Gender-Based Violence and Femicide under the theme: “Maximising the voices of children in addressing social ills affecting them.”

The Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu, will attend the sitting  and respond to issues brought by the members of the Children’s Parliament. The Parliament is held in conjunction with development partners including the Nelson Mandela Children’s fund, UNICEF and Save the Children South Africa.
