The Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu, will on Tuesday, 08 February, launch the Social Security Review publication in Cape Town under the theme, Evolution of Social Security in South Africa: An Agenda for Action…working towards a Social Compact.
The launch seeks to activate debate and enable broader societal participation in setting the agenda for action to be taken to improve the South African Social Security System.
The chapters of this publication, written by ten independent authors, cover a wide spectrum of issues, from the historical perspective of Social Security in the country; linkages to Section 27 of the Constitution and the rights-based approach; the relationship between social security and the economy; and some policy actions undertaken by Government to provide Social Security and Protection for South Africans.
Through this publication, the Department intends to provide and disseminate social security information that would otherwise be unavailable in a useful, reliable, and accessible format for the public to understand.
In addition to hearing from the contributing authors, the launch will also provide a platform for stakeholders from Government, Business, Civil Society, and Academia, to engage on the potential partnership that can be forged between these sectors of society, to facilitate greater economic inclusion of the marginalised. Through this initiative, the Department hopes to strengthen the linkages between government and business in the interests of building a social compact to work together to enhance the social and economic inclusion of all South Africans, especially through skills development and social entrepreneurship.
Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the launch arranged as follows:
