MEDIA ADVISORY

29 June 2021: The Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu will on Wednesday - 30 June 2021, dialogue with young people who received Social Development services and how they were impacted by COVID-19. The virtual dialogue aims to bring hope and show the resilience of young people even when the country and the world is faced with a pandemic.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of 16 June 1976, when young people protested the imposition of Afrikaans by the apartheid regime as a medium of instruction. Following the advent of democracy in 1994, the new democratic government declared 16 June as National Youth Day and June as Youth Month.

The declaration honours the contribution of the youth in the struggle for the liberation of South Africa. This year, National Youth Day and Youth Month are celebrated under the theme: “The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke: Growing youth employment for an inclusive and transformed society.

As part of the programme, Minister Zulu will be joined by Ms Welile Gumede who started a farm using her Child Support Grant.
