MEDIA ADVISORY

24 June 2021: The Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu will from 24 to 25 June 2021 embark on a two-day outreach programme in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal as part of the Youth Month Programme.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of June 16 1976, when young people protested against imposition of Afrikaans by the apartheid regime as a medium of instruction. Following the advent of democracy in 1994, the new democratic government declared 16 June as National Youth Day and June as Youth Month.

The declaration honours of the contribution of the youth in the struggle for the liberation of South Africa. This year National Youth Day and Youth Month will be celebrated under the theme: “The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke: Growing youth employment for an inclusive and transformed society.

As part of the programme, Minister Zulu will address the uMgungundlovu Youth-NPO Summit and launch the uMgungundlovu Anti-Substance Abuse Forum. The activities are organised by uMzansi Youth in Business - a youth NPO based in Sweetwaters, Pietermaritzburg.

The organisation aims to empower and unite the voices of youth in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas through leadership, entrepreneurial skills and advocating for their needs and interests in matters that affect them. The Anti-Substance Youth Forum will work jointly with the Local Drug Action Committee to expedite the implementation of the National Drug Master Plan (2019-2024), with specific focus on drug prevention programmes targeting the youth.
