DEPUTY MINISTER BOGOPANE-ZULU TO RAISE AWARENESS ON ALBINISM Print E-mail
Friday, 20 April 2018
The Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mrs Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, will be in the Mpumalanga Province to raise awareness about the plight of persons with albinism in the province. Mpumalanga has registered some of the highest numbers of murder cases of persons with albinism.

Over the last decade, more than 200 cases of murdered people with albinism have been reported. More than 500 cases of attacks against them have been reported.

Recently, a case of murder of a teenage girl with albinism, Gabisile Shabane, was reported in Witbank, Mpumalanga. She was kidnapped and later found murdered and mutilated. Another case of a mutilated person with albinism, Xolani Mkhize, was reported in Pienaar, Mpumalanga. He had been buried after dying from a skin condition but his body was later found exhumed and mutilated. Following the shocking cases, the Deputy Minister visited the Shabane and the Mkhize families and will, on Saturday 21 April, attend Xolani Mkhize’s tombstone unveiling ceremony in Pienaar, Mpumalanga.

The Deputy Minister will also hold a dialogue focusing on the plight of people with albinism at Msogwaba Stadium.
