The mission of NISIS is to accelerate the eradication of poverty in South Africa through the use of enabling technologies that support the improved planning, targeting, co-ordination and delivery of anti-poverty services. 

NISIS came to life in November 2006 following Cabinet approval to develop its business case. As a Social Protection and Community Development (SP & CD) Cluster initiative, led by the Department of Social Development (DSD), focused on enhancing the coordination of social protection service delivery, it has gone through a process of conceptualization, feasibility study, proof-of-concept and initial implementation.
