Africa Day webinar and launch of the #NoExcuse “Brave” campaign

The Deputy Minister of Social Development, Ms Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, in partnership with the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) Men’s Sector, Takuwani Riime – Men Championing Change, #NoExcuse initiative as well as Lifeline will be hosting a webinar and launch of the “Brave” campaign.

Gender-based violence (GBV) has been one of the challenges during the COVID-19 lockdown period. This has highlighted a lack of services to men as victims and perpetrators and as brothers trying to reach out.

To close this gap, a WhatsApp line to support the GBV Command Centre line (0800 428 428) has been established to offer men the support they need in order to be their own inner champions. To access these services, victims and/or perpetrators of Gender Based Violence simply need to text the word “BRAVE” to 0800 150 150, this will route people to a series of prompts to link them directly to the right organisation for the specific assistance they require.

In our commitment to mobilise men under the Men Championing Change Programme, which focus on social structural drivers and behavioural change, the webinar will facilitate dialogues. These dialogues are aimed at mobilising African communities to ensure that women, men and children are safe and secure.

The webinar will explore linkages between Pan-Africanism, current socio-economic status of the country, as well as reflecting on the role of men as agents of change. #MenChampioningChange.
