DEPUTY MINISTER BOGOPANE-ZULU TO HOST AN EARLY CHRISTMAS PARTY FOR CHILDREN OF KATLEHONG, GAUTENG Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 January 2019

The Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mrs Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, will on Friday, December 21, host an early Christmas party for children from Paballo Thuso Ya Bana in Katlehong, Gauteng.

Paballo Thuso Ya Bana is a special school which also provides early childhood development (ECD) services to children between the ages of 0 and 4.  The school has a total of 315 learners and eleven of them have physical and intellectual disabilities.

The Christmas party will afford the children in attendance a chance to learn more about the lives and values carried by former President Nelson Mandela and Mama Albertina Nontsikelelo Sisulu. The impact of these two struggle icons in the lives of all South Africans will also form part of the day’s discussions. Both Tata Mandela and Mama Sisulu would be turning a hundred years this year.

As part of the Department’s Social Relief of Distress (SRD), the Deputy Minister will distribute vanity packs which comprise toiletries and sanitary wear for the children. Special packs will be handed to children with albinism as these contain sunscreen, lip care and sunglasses.

The SRD programme forms part of the Department’s initiative of ensuring that leaners from poor families are taken care of through the provision of basic needs and services.

This initiative forms part of the mandate of the Department of Social Development as the custodian of the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 which talks to upholding the rights of children. The Act also seeks to protect the children against any forms of abuse including human trafficking, child labour and neglect.
