DEPUTY MINISTER BOGOPANE-ZULU TAKES THE ANTI-SUBSTANCE AND ALCOHOL ABUSE FESTIVE CAMPAIGN TO PAARL, WESTERN CAPE Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 January 2019

As South Africans head into a full swing festive season, holiday celebrations and parties are ramping up. During this time of the year, excessive alcohol consumption and illicit drug use cause untold miseries to many households. This is also the time of the year that young people engage in binge and underage drinking which often leads to unprotected sexual encounters.

It is estimated that Government spends R37. 9 billion per annum on alcohol-related crimes, violence and accidents. South Africa was ranked in the top three countries in the world on alcohol consumption.

In an effort to combat this festive season phenomenon, the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Ms Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu will on Saturday, 1 December 2018 launch the annual festive season anti-substance and alcohol abuse campaign in Paarl, Western Cape Province.

Given its location in the wine-farming areas of the Western Cape and the notorious dop system, Paarl is one of the areas with an excessive alcohol consumption - fuelling domestic violence and high levels of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

During the launch of the campaign, the Deputy Minister will visit local liquor outlets/taverns in Stellenbosch and Khayamandi to interact with the patrons and owners as well as to monitor compliance with the norms and standards of the National Liquor Act.

The campaign under the theme: “Building a Community that is Free of Alcohol and Drug Abuse” seeks to educate the public, particularly young people about the harmful effects of alcohol and drug abuse. The campaign also speaks to parents and adults about the active role they can play in fostering an alcohol and drug-free festive season in communities throughout South Africa.

The campaign is part of the Central Drug Authority’s implementation of the National Drug Master Plan (NDMP). Engaging communities in preventing alcohol and illicit drug abuse is the central goal of the NDMP.

The campaign will run until February 2019, targeting - amongst others, institutions of higher learning, pregnant women and primary caregivers to children and persons with disabilities.

Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the event, scheduled as follows:

Date:               Saturday, 1 December 2018
Time:              17h00-20h00
Venue:            Stellenbosch Police Station and thereafter proceed to local taverns
