WOMEN OF LETLHAKENG VILLAGE IN NORTH WEST TO BENEFIT FROM WOMEN EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVE Print E-mail
Tuesday, 20 November 2018
Following extensive engagement between the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mrs Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, and the traditional leaders in July this year, the Women Empowerment Project will finally be realised at Letlhakeng village, North West Province.

The workshop was a response to concerns raised by the Social Development Committee of the National House of Traditional Leaders regarding government support for development initiatives, particularly in rural areas under the jurisdiction of traditional leaders.

It was during the workshop that women empowerment programmes came up to be amongst burning issues which calls for urgent attention and action from various stakeholders including the Department of Social Development. A resolution was also reached that since women are vulnerable and most impoverished, this empowerment programme must be rolled out in areas of traditional leaders who were part of the workshop.

The Letlhakeng Women Empowerment initiative falls under the Women Empowerment Framework, which seeks to address decades-long neglect of empowerment projects specifically targeting women in rural areas. The goal of this initiative is to ensure that they become productive citizens and receive adequate access into economic opportunities in line with Agenda 2030. Women are the backbone of the rural economy but still continue to face more constraints than men in accessing key productive resources such as land and credit, which limit their capacity to participate and take advantage of new economic opportunities.

The conceptualisation of the Women Empowerment Framework and its implementation is premised on the understanding that when women earn an income they are more likely to invest in their cildren’s education, health, household nutrition and food security, and increasing livelihood assets for the family.

This initiative will go a long way to reverse the past injustices which concluded that women do not deserve equal opportunities as men; they still continue to face challenges of marginalisation from participation in the main stream economy and gender inequality. This goes beyond culture, social systems and religion which often promote patriarchy and discrimination against women.
