DEPUTY MINISTER OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT TO OBSERVE INTERNATIONAL FOETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDER AWARENESS DAY Print E-mail
Saturday, 08 September 2018
Every year on September 9, the world observes International Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day. People around the world gather for events to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy and the plight of individuals and families who struggle with FAS. The Department of Social Development led by Deputy Minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu will join the international community by reporting back to South Africa on the 9-9-9 Campaign which has seen her traveling across all nine provinces for nine consecutive days to educate and raise awareness of FASD, a range of disabilities caused by alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

The latest global statistics on FASD show that South Africa has the highest prevalence of FASD at 111 per 1 000 people. Despite the highest prevalence, a situational and gap analysis study commissioned by UNICEF found that there was limited public awareness amongst professionals and the general public about FASD in the country, making it difficult for early identification and provision on appropriate intervention services for children and persons with FASD. The Deputy Minister launched the 9-9-9 with the aim of raising awareness on FASD.

Tomorrow, Deputy Minister will be joined by community members, government representatives, traditional leaders and NPOs to observe the day.
