According to communities, Diepsloot means "deep ditch". A percentage of 45.5 of the area is populated by informal settlements. Others live in government-subsidised homes. As the Department of Social Development, led by the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mrs Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu - a Community Centre is opening at Africa Tikkun Youth Centre in Diepsloot. On Monday, 18 June, the Deputy Minister will be speaking to the youth of Diepsloot and discussing what Youth Month means to them in a dialogue. This year’s Youth Month, which takes place during the centenary of Nelson Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu, will be commemorated under the theme; “Live the legacy: Towards a socio-economically empowered youth.” Young people, as we commemorate 16 June 1976, are expected to keep their legacy alive by taking advantage of possible opportunities by building, and ushering, change into their lives. In South Africa, the majority of the country’s population is comprised of youth who are facing the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality. Participation of youth in various national activities, including their role in the mainstream economy, is important in moving South Africa forward. To bring this into effect, the Deputy Minister will host dialogue with young people to speak about topics ranging from substance abuse, employment opportunities, health care and gender-based violence. On the day, the Deputy Minister will, in partnership with MTN SA Foundation, also open a fully-fledged computer laboratory to empower and equip the people of Diepsloot with the necessary skills for future employment opportunities. Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the Youth Celebration event.
