Thursday, 12 April 2018

Learners from Noluthando, a special needs school in Khayelitsha, will benefit from a computer laboratory with specialised equipment and school uniform as of Friday 13 April. The specialised computer lab and school uniform will be handed over to the school by the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mrs Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, in partnership with MTN SA Foundation and the South African Social Security Agency.

This handover marks a long-standing Public Private Partnership between Social Development and the MTN SA Foundation. The aim of the partnership is to address the issue of a lack of technologically-advanced and user-friendly educational equipment in schools to assist learners with special needs.

Noluthando School for the Deaf was identified as one of the schools in need of these kinds of technological facilities. Established in 1988, the school comprises 270 learners between the ages of 3 and 18 years. Initially, the school only catered for deaf learners but now it also educates learners with other disabilities and learning difficulties.

The Deputy Minister will also distribute school uniform packs to 80 under-privileged learners from Noluthando and four surrounding schools. The school uniform packs include socks, two tunics or skirts for girl children, two pairs of shorts or trousers for boys, a jersey, a tie and two shirts per child. They also include vanity packs with self-care basics such as deodorant, sanitary pads and body lotion.

The allocation of school uniform forms part of the department’s Social Relief of Distress programme which assists leaners from families who cannot afford to buy school uniform for their children.
