The Department of Social Development is a member of the International Social Security Association (ISSA), which is an internationally renowned principal institution bringing together institutions, government ministries and social security administrators around the world. The ISSA’s aim is to promote dynamic social security as the social dimension in a globalizing world by supporting excellence in social security administration.
Every three years, the ISSA holds its General Assembly, combined with a week-long conference titled the “World Social Security Forum” (WSSF) at which its member organisations deliberate on the most current and pressing issues facing social security systems in the world. There was an overwhelming vote at the Moscow conference for South Africa to host the 2010 conference. The delegates, through the ISSA President, Ms. Corazon de la Paz, requested the then Minister of Social Development to kindly consider the proposal. Delegates confirmed their support to the request by acclamation. This year, South Africa (Department of Social Development) will be hosting the World Social Security Forum. The global financial and economic crisis has reaffirmed the key contribution of social security to social stability and economic recovery. The World Social Security Forum will take place in Cape Town, South Africa, 29 November - 4 December 2010. This unique global event will gather over one thousand leaders and administrators of social security institutions, policy-makers, representatives of international organizations and social policy experts from more than 100 countries. The conference is only open to member organisations of the ISSA. Other people from non-member organisations will only be able to attend on invitation either from the ISSA or the National Organising Committee, using their own discretion.
