Old Age Grant Print E-mail

An old age grant is a monthly income provided by the South African Social Security Agency to older people. The grant is only paid out to people whose financial income is below a certain level. A means test is used to determine the financial level of the applicants. The income and assets of the applicant and their spouse is assessed to find out if they qualify and to what amount they are entitled.

The old age grant, as from 01 October 2008, was R960 per month and as from 01 April 2009 it is R1010
 per month.

WHO QUALIFIES

A person must be a South African citizen or permanent resident

A women who is aged 60 and older or a man who 

    1) After 1 April 2009 is 61 years of age and older

    2) After 1 April 2010 is 60 years of age and older

STEPS TO FOLLOW

• Complete an application form

• You will need to bring:

o 13 digit South African ID book

o A copy of Proof of residence

o A Proof of marital status: marriage certificate, divorce order and agreement or death certificate of the late spouse (if widow/er)

 NOTE THAT:

• You must be resident in South Africa at the time of application

• Your spouse must comply with the means test *

• You must not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution

• You must not be in receipt of another social grant
